Asian Small Farmers Animation Competition

Background

In 2007, ten successful cases of small farmers in high value market located in Asia were identified and studied by Agricultural and Food Marketing Association for Asia and the Pacific (AFMA) and its consultants. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with AFMA is willing to put their successful stories into a CD-ROM to expose farmers in the region opportunities and inspirations by learning from other fellow farmers.

Within this framework, AFMA with support from FAO is opening an ‘Asian Small Farmers Animation Competition’ to tell the stories of these successful cases. One of ten cases was selected for a competition. The competition is opened for university students to form a team. The task of each team is to create animation from provided materials. The winning team will receive a prize, certificate and a contract agreement with AFMA to prepare further the CD-ROM multimedia of the ten cases studies worth THB 90,000 where all materials will be provided as in the case competition. Eventually their CD-ROMs will be reproduced and distributed to farmers and many other associations as educational resources within the region.  


Team Qualifications

The competition is opened to all undergraduate students enrolled in public and private universities within Thailand. Each team must consist of at least three and not exceed five students with one lecturer adviser. Each university can submit a maximum of three teams for the competition. University may choose and approve the teams to represent at the competition. It is recommended that at least one member within a team should have sufficient English communication skills.


Process

The team shall send the application form with required documents to AFMA. After that AFMA will hold a brief meeting session at FAO RAP to explain about the case, competition and answer questions from contestants. After that each team will have one month to create and submit the animation. Please check the date details at ‘Important dates’.


Materials Provided

  • Case studies report (14 pages)
  • Learning points
  • Narrative Voice & Scripts (5-10 minutes)
  • Photographs of farmers and activities along the supply chain (approximately 20 pics)

Application

Each team shall send the application with following documents
1. Application form (Download from the competition site www.afmaasia.org/CDanimation)
2. Letter of Approval from faculty and university
3. Student Letter (a certified letter issue by university showing student status) of each team members
4. Copy of Supervisor ID


Entries submission Requirement

One team can submit one animation. The length of animation shall be between 5-10 minutes. There will be no limitation of technique or format. Contestants can be as creative and communicative as they wish.

  • Please clearly label your CD or DVD with team name and university name and also name your file of entry in this format: “FAO&AFMA CD-ROM Animation (Team Name)”
  • Type of file should be an electronic animation compatible with computers without requiring advanced software
To ensure that your CD or DVD are not damaged or broken, please mail them in a padded protective envelope or package.
(Note: Late submission of the entries will not be qualified for the competition)


Terms and conditions

  • The judges’ decision is final
  • All entries must be original and are the work of contestants
  • All entries must not have been previously published, broadcast, or distributed
  • Materials of the case studies are property of FAO & AFMA
  • All entries should be licenses free at all terms
  • Contestants must entirely use their own creativity for the CD-ROM preparation
  • Multimedia presentation must be completed within provided time period
  • FAO and AFMA will hold all rights to the submitted animation
  • The supervisor of winner team should agree to sign a contract of preparing 10 case studies multimedia and thus has legally responsibility for the completion of the CD-ROM development


Scoring Criteria

Story:  Interesting and clear explanation of the provided case study
Accuracy:  information is not manipulated or mislead
Creativity:  Capturing, unique and innovated
Graphic design: Audio and visual effects
Balance: The balance of animated design and content
Communication: The CD is targeted for the audience of fellow farmers and extension officers
           
Semi-final round judging process will be proceeded by three judges from FAO, AFMA and institution.  For the final round, an honored guest will be invited to decide the winning team.
