Backgrounds

Improvement in food marketing was a major concern for the countries of the Asia and the Pacific Region in nineteen eighties.  Preliminary successes in production adequacy for basic food security resulted in a surge in foodgrain production in these countries, and bottlenecks were being experienced in output disposal.  Therefore, the stability of food supplies became a prominent problem requiring urgent resolution, and involving many elements:  storage and warehousing, grading and standardization, transportation and shipment, processing and conversion, preservation, and other market-related dimensions.  there also was the need to use regional cooperation in training the potential of these elements.

As a consequence of the growing realization for the needs to upgrade performance levels in food marketing, FAO sponsored a regional Group Consultation on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries for Food Marketing Systems Improvement.  It was recommended that a voluntary association of food marketing institutions be established.  Subsequently, the Association of Food and Agricultural Marketing Agencies in Asia and the Pacific (AFMA) began to operate in 1983 using contributions from member agencies and financial and technical support of the FAO.

The AFMA is an autonomous body governed by an Executive Committee and General Assembly.  An Executive Committee is elected every two years to plan strategy, formulate a budget, and determine and implement the activities to be undertaken.  The Executive Committee Meeting is held every year while the General Assembly meets every two years.

The Secretariat of AFMA is based in the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP), Bangkok.
